After years of controversy over the “Trevian” mascot of New Trier, which has led to complaints from the Roman military population, New Trier High School has been considering the use of a new mascot.
The Trevian mascot is based off of a Roman soldier from Germany in honor of the New Trier founders’ heritage. Roman military supporters have made numerous complaints and staged protests against the offensive use of the Trevian mascot. Local Roman caliphate Metallicus Amanturus states, “We believe that this mascot perpetuates the stereotype of the Roman military being aggressive and having large foam heads. We strongly disagree with this representation of our community and hope that New Trier considers terminating their use of the Trevian character.”
Invasive species advocates have teamed up with the Romans to propose using the Nutria, a semi-aquatic, extremely invasive rodent from South America, as the New Trier mascot. The proposal explained that the nutria has an aggressive, go-getter attitude and aligns with the New Trier mission; “To commit minds to inquiry, hearts to compassion, and lives to the service of humanity.” The administration said that it is considering all semi-aquatic mascot options moving forward and that they are looking forward to undoing the miscarriage of justice that has framed the Roman military population in such a negative light.
“We believe that this mascot perpetuates the stereotype of the Roman military being aggressive and having large foam heads.”
The North Shore Roman Empire Military Rights and Representation Commission (NSREMRRC) has spearheaded the movement for the Nutria Mascot, even forming a subcommittee, titled Removing the Trevian as the New Trier Mascot and Replacing it with a Nutria (RTNTMRN). The RTNTMRN has explained that the nutria, known as a pest that destroys aquatic vegetation, marshes, and many man made structures, is the perfect representation of the spirit and mission of New Trier High School. The administration hopes that the new mascot will satisfy the NSREMRRC and avoid any future conflicts.
